Fruit Tree Pruning -
Saturday, March 1, 8:30am- 11:30am

Pruning fruit trees is an art and a science. The presentation will include pruning techniques, training young trees for fruit production, why you prune and methods of pruning existing, older trees. A hands-on pruning demonstration will also be performed on the Arboretum fruit trees. Donations will be accepted for the class and refreshments. Evening Gardening Program

The May Arboretum will be holding its annual gardening classes in the evening this year. Designed to educate both novice and seasoned gardeners, this series offer classes on organic vegetable gardening, soils, fertilizers, lawn care, plant choice, water-efficient landscape design and conservation techniques. Take the Fear Out of Pruning

Take the fear out of pruning by attending this 3-hour, hands-on workshop. Learn the basic pruning principles and techniques of pruning then practice what you learned on the Arboretum small trees. Pruning Workshop Offered in Spanish & English
Saturday March 29, 9 am - 11:30 am

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Nevada Division of Forestry and the Wilbur D. May Arboretum is offering a pruning class in Spanish and English. Part of Cooperative Extension 12th Annual Landscape Management series, this class offers the beginners the fundamental of properly pruning trees. Join Presenters/Interpreters: Marcel Fernando Schaerer, International Professional Development Services, Elizabeth Spencer, Horticulturist, Desert Research Institute and Leslie Allen, Commercial Horticulture Program Coordinator. A $30 fee is charged for course material and refreshments. Make checks payable to the Board of Regents on the day of the class.

> Spring Sprinklers, Turn-on and Tune-up
Saturday, April 5, 9am-11:00am

Join Irrigation Specialists, Mike Furlong and John Gualano, Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space in a two hour workshop on how to turn on your sprinkler system correctly and to make sure your sprinkler system is working efficiently before the season begins. Learn how to trouble shoot and repair your system and water efficiently. The program and refreshments are sponsored by the Truckee Meadows Water Authority and Washoe County Department of Water Resources.

Creative Container Gardening
Saturday, April 12, 9am -10 am

Join Lainie Vreeland, local gardening expert, in an hour-long workshop on creative container gardening. Learn how to create unique floral settings, texture, color, repetition and basic design principles. Also become skilled at how to mix and match the different flowers for a dramatic affect. Donations will be accepted for the course materials and refreshments.

Designing Sprinkler Systems for Efficiency

Learn how to design or renovate your home sprinkler or drip system for efficiency. Learn the basic principles of design and parts used to make your system efficient to produce healthy plants. Join Mark Vollmer, awarding winning professional published photographer, teacher and author (Tahoe Rim Trail) in an evening of exquisite photographs choreographed to music. Come take the journey though the arboretum and listen and learn the basic techniques used to capture the essence of each photograph. Native and ornamental plant sale. Come early to have the best choice. Learn from botanical society members about the plants for the area. They sell tried and true plants and are priced right! Designing Butterfly Gardens

Join Lainie Vreeland local garden expert, in a slide presentation and lecture to learn how to create and attract butterflies in your garden using perennials and annuals. Lainie will also discuss basic design principles and techniques used to attract these beauties of nature. On Saturday only, and after the presentation, Lainie will take you on a brief tour of the gardens.

Join Lynda Nelson, Washoe County Park Planner Project Coordinator, formerly the horticulturist for the May Arboretum in an hour long educational plant identification tour. With 30 years of native plant experience, Lynda will show you native plants that survive in our area and ones that are used frequently with great success in landscapes. Don’t miss this summer evening of learning. Bring a camera, pad of paper and pencil for note taking.

Lavender Harvesting & Distilling
Wednesday, July 16, 6:00-8:00pm

Lavender is prized for the fragrance of their purple flowers and bountiful aromatic foliage. Learn about the different varieties of lavender grown locally, the process of harvesting and distilling, and the final production of their precious oils into lavender products. A great learning experience taught by Kristen Harris, Lavender Ridge.

Summer/Autumn Pruning of Fruit Trees

Late summer and early fall are the time to prune established (old) fruit trees, crabapples, and decorative plums. The presentation includes pruning techniques, training young trees for fruit production, and methods of pruning established, older fruit trees. A hands-on pruning demonstration focusing on summer pruning will also be done on the Arboretum fruit trees. Donations will be accepted for course material and refreshments.
