Populus Populus fremontii/Populus tremuloides Salicaceae family

Though Populus is not the common name, it applies because the properties of its genera are, from what I understand, the same. Two examples I have chosen are Western Cottonwood (left- named for its cotton covered seeds) and Quaking Aspen (right- named for its leaves, which quiver in the slightest breezes).Despite the difference in habitat, size,

bark and leaf texture, they share the same chemical characteristics.      The leaf buds and catkins are edible, despite the bitter flavor and are high in vitamin C. Salicin, the key ingredientin aspirin, can be found throughout the tree, but the largest

amounts are in the leaves, buds and cambium can be used to relieve pain, inflammation and fever. One can also soak the buds in alcohol and make a salve for such topical uses as anti-inflammatory and vulenary ( i.e. promotes healing of wounds).
